Gas powered appliances have been around for a long time, and they have been improved in many ways. One of the features that older gas appliances have is a pilot light. Before gas appliances were equipped with electronic ignition, this was the standard way of making sure that the gas was lit. A pilot light runs off of a small stream of gas and is constantly burning. This is not a huge expense, but since it runs 24 hours a day year round, it does add up to a significant amount of gas wasted. There is also the risk of the flame going out, allowing the gas to leak out into your home. While most appliances have some sort of automatic shut-off when this happens, it doesn’t always work properly. You should always be careful when lighting a pilot light when it has gone out. Make sure the area is vented well and that there is no smell of gas.
